Convicted Russian ex-mayor cuts jail time by agreeing to fight in Ukraine

MOSCOW: A disgraced former Russian mayor convicted over bribery had his prison sentence cut short after signing a contract to fight with Russia‘s military in Ukraine. Oleg Gumenyuk, who served as mayor of the far eastern city of Vladivostok between 2018 and 2021, was convicted last year of accepting bribes worth $432,000 and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.
However, he was released after agreeing to bear arms and fight in Ukraine, his lawyer told Russian news outlet Kommersant. Photos circulating online show a man resembling Gumenyuk carrying a gun along with other servicemen. Russia has gone to extraordinary lengths to replenish its troops in Ukraine.
Not ‘aliens’, but dolls made from bones: Peru scientists
A pair of “alien mummies” that mysteriously turned up at the airport in Peru’s capital last October have entirely Earthly origins, according to a scientific analysis revealed on Friday. The two small specimens were described as humanoid dolls by experts in Lima, and likely fashioned from both human and animal parts.
“They’re not extraterrestrials. They’re dolls joined together with modern synthetic glue,” said Flavio Estrada, an archeologist. The two figurines turned up in the Lima airport offices of courier DHL in a cardboard box, and were made to look like mummified bodies dressed in traditional Andean attire. Some media outlets subsequently speculated about possible alien origin.
